I Rather Like Irises

"I rather like irises," Nancy said, looking out the kitchen window at a flowerbed full of purple blooms. She spoke in a silly, sing-songy voice that I imagined she had used in reading to her three children when they were small. Her oldest son was sitting there too, and we all burst out laughing that she had interrupted the flow of our conversation with her totally unrelated pronouncement about irises.

Now, every year when I see blooming irises, I smile and think of Nancy--who always makes me laugh--and I remember, "I rather like irises."

(This is the Nancy for whom my cat is named.)

Helping Hands

At the Cherokee Triangle Art Fair, Louisville, Kentucky.

When I go to an art fair, I always spend more time watching people than looking at the art. I loved this fleeting vignette: a father helping his son, tiny hands contrasted with adult hands. One can sense the love and trust between them.

These two were standing just outside the children's tent where dozens of kids were dressed in smocks, creating all kinds of art projects.

Vintage

April 20, 1963, was the day I arrived on this planet. Tonight, 44 years later, I dined with friends and didn't leave time to make a photograph. So, minutes before midnight, I opened a photo album from year one and snapped a picture of that. I guess I took a day off.

Looking for Rainbows

It rained almost all day here, then when the sun finally came out late in the evening, a friend called me to say there was a great double-rainbow. I went out immediately, but didn't see it at all. Too bad. The light and the sky were still beautiful, though.

Easter Brunch

Easter Brunch at the Jefferson Club, 500 W Jefferson Street, Louisville, Kentucky

I hate that I couldn't get her face, and I didn't have the guts to close in for a clear, noise-free shot; but one can still see that she is fabulous in her Easter frock and hat.

Oh, I could write a sonnet about your Easter bonnet . . . .
